CAD Services
Extend the value of computer-aided design (CAD) files, such as DWG files generated by AutoCAD® from Autodesk, Inc., to your entire organization and consolidate them within your content management solution with OnBase CAD Services. This OnBase integration module makes it possible for engineers to store and retrieve drawings within the searchable OnBase repository. Non-CAD users can be given rights to retrieve, markup and annotate CAD drawings as part of a review or approval process.
Because a CAD drawing is treated like any other OnBase document, it can also become part of an automated workflow, a records retention plan, an OnBase Risk and Compliance Solution for needs like ISO-9000 or any other OnBase process. A CAD drawing can also be cross-referenced with supporting documents (such as a subdivision plan to the associated permits), making it possible for users to move from one to another with a mouse-click. Document management also provides the ability to check out a document, preventing two users from making concurrent changes, and track revisions.
With CAD Services, CAD users can save a drawing directly to the OnBase repository without affecting the parent-child relationships (Xrefs) within it. Keywords used to index the documents can be extracted from the title block of an AutoCAD drawing. Drawings stored in OnBase can be retrieved by CAD users from within the CAD application for review or modification or by OnBase users using a keyword search, custom query, folder view or other configurable interface of choice. OnBase users can be granted the rights to simply view documents or they can be allowed to make markups and annotations.
Application
The ability to make engineering documents available to non-CAD users and associate them with supporting documents can be used in a number of environments, including Manufacturing , Government , and Construction .
In homebuilding, for example, designers create a CAD drawing of a new model home that must be reviewed by the estimators who provide quotes for plumbing, wiring and framing. An automated workflow process could be used to route the drawings according to business rules, or OnBase Collaboration could be used to create a virtual workspace that supports threaded discussions. Once approved, the design can be distributed to marketing personnel, salespeople and contractors. Once the home has been completed and sold, the drawing could become part of a virtual customer folder and associated with warranties, permits and other documents pertaining to the construction.
CAD Services can improve communication and accountability in quality assurance initiatives, such as ISO-9000 in applications such as electronic change order requests. Government agencies and planning commissions must often review and approve engineering documents, which could be linked to agendas, citizen complaints or permitting applications using CAD Services. Making CAD drawings more available in these and other instances assures that other departments or processes affected by these activities have the information they need to proceed competently.
