HL7 - (Health Level Seven)
The OnBase HL7 Module incorporates an enterprise content management (ECM) component to organizations that use HL7 to exchange key sets of clinical and administrative data among disparate applications for their business. The OnBase HL7 interface is capable of listening for all HL7 messages, including user-defined messages. The Information within the HL7 message can be used to automate the indexing of documents by utilizing the content of HL7 messages, which can be stored in OnBase as an identifiable set. The content can also be stored and presented in an intuitive, customizable format for viewing purposes. The OnBase HL7 interface is unlike most hospital systems and equipment, which only deal with specific HL7 messages. The OnBase HL7 functionality can listen for any type of message and is not tied to a specific version of HL7 (e.g. 2.3 or 2.4).
There is no limit to the number of values assigned to a message that OnBase can store for document indexing purposes. The OnBase HL7 interface attaches actions to each message as soon as the message enters the system. Examples include automatically storing the keyword values that facilitate automated indexing or the creation of an electronic form that contains both keyword values and form field values extracted from HL7 fields.
The OnBase HL7 interface is capable of sending HL7 messages and is integrated with OnBase input modules such as COLD/ERM, Document Import Processor (DIP), Document Imaging, etc. When these modules are utilized in order to process a document, HL7 messages are generated and sent to one or more destination applications. HL7 adopts PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), therefore ensuring the network is not flooded with broadcast information.
The Bar Code Face Sheet Generation for HL7 provides auto-indexing functionality to capture patient keyword values which greatly reduces errors in data entry and increases efficiencies and productivity, allowing more accurate capture and retrieval of patient documentation. By eliminating the need to index patient information, such as the patient name, medical record number or date of service, accuracy and productivity increases. Efficiencies gained by automating the indexing process provide organizations the opportunity to re-deploy employees to higher priority tasks impacting patient satisfaction.
Application
An example of an application in which the HL7 Module functionality would be valuable is to make payment posting faster and more efficient. In this instance, thousands of Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) are received each day. The HL7 line-of-business application periodically sends ADT HL7 messages for each newly admitted patient (typically including items such as name, social security number, date of birth, insurance numbers and attending physician, and so on), which are then captured by the OnBase HL7 listener. HL7 field data are mapped to OnBase keywords, which are then available for automated indexing of all incoming supporting documents. This will enable a person to scan in a paper EOB and have subsequent data fields populated automatically simply by entering a single index value. Data shared between OnBase and any HL7-compliant applications reduces the need to enter duplicate information into multiple disparate line-of-business applications, without custom programming.
As many hospitals do not have the ability to generate bar code labels during the registration process, the individual medical record documents do not include the bar codes needed to automate the capture of specific patient information. With the OnBase HL7 Module, this information can be captured from an HL7 message and used to create a unique bar-coded coversheet for each patient chart. This solution allows hospitals to more accurately capture and retrieve patient documentation in supporting the organization's Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
